Identifying and Addressing Learning Needs in Grades 2 - 12

Students of average or above average intelligence who experience academic difficulties affecting their grade-level performance may be helped by educational therapy. This program, associated with the National Institute for Learning Development (NILD), is designed to strengthen individual weaknesses in auditory or visual perception, basic learning skills and/or cognition. (Visit www.nild.org for more information.) Specific needs are usually identified first by parents and teachers, and confirmed through careful diagnostic testing. A current (within three years) psycho-educational evaluation documenting exceptional needs is required for acceptance into this program. Upon acceptance, each student meets with an educational therapist for two 80-minute sessions each week. These one-on-one sessions include a variety of exercises designed to strengthen areas of specific perceptual and cognitive deficits. The rest of the day is spent in the regular classroom with modifications and accommodations to meet the student’s particular needs. The goal of educational therapy is for the student to become successful and independent in the regular classroom.
