Elementary FAQ's

• What is the earliest time that we can drop off children for morning carpool?

Morning carpool line is open for students arriving between 7:30 a.m. and 7:59 a.m.   Elementary students may not be dropped off before 7:30 a.m.


• What time do I need to arrive to pick up my child at the end of the day?

Afternoon carpool lines are open between 3:00 - 3:20 p.m.  If you elect to arrive prior to 3:00 p.m., please remain in the right lane (reserved for Elementary carpoolers).  Please do not block parking lot access ways, and please do not leave your car unattended

• What are the hours of the Elementary school day? 

The regular school day for elementary students begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 3:00 p.m.  There are several half-days on the schedules and some "No School" days.  Please refer to the School Calendar for a list of these days.


• What is the procedure for entering campus for Carpool? 

When turning onto Wolverine Drive, please remain in the right-hand lane for Elementary Carpool.  At the beginning of the year, you will be given a folder to attach to your windshield visor.  This folder should contain your child(ren)s last name and grade level.  When you approach the staging area, please make sure folder is visible so the duty teacher can page your child and have him/her waiting when you pull up.  Children will be loaded on the passenger side from the sidewalk area.


• If I cannot make it by 3:00 p.m., what options are available to me:

An Extended Care Program is provided to those students who are on campus after the regular school hours of 3:00 p.m.  Extended care hours are from 3:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.  Weather permitting, students will generally have use of the Elementary playgrounds.  Older Elementary students (grades 4-6)  will normally go to the Library from 4 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. to work on homework, etc.  If you are interested in the Extended Care Program, please submit an application to the Elementary office at the beginning of the school year.  Extended care is a fee-based program.  Fees will be attached to the application.  


• What can my child wear if he / she is awarded a dress down privilege?:

The privilege of dress down day is awarded monthly for Citizens of the Month and occasionally for other types of awards.  Thile want to provide an enjoyable special privilege, we still maintain that students should be neatly dressed.  For boys or girls, long ans (jeans, khakis, etc) or shorts the length of NCS uniform shorts may be worn.  Pants must have a waistband:  no drawstrings, elastic waists or excessively baggy les.  Avoid low necklines, spaghetti straps and tank tops.  Designer labels hsould be worn in good taste;  small tags, Nike 'checks' are O.K.  Excessively long shirttails must be tucked inside pants.  Hats/ headwear or sarves are not permitted.  Sandals, flip-flots and high platform shoes are not be be worn.


• I understand that on Fridays, children can wear Wolverine spirit wear.  What are the dress code guidelines?

On Fridays and other occasional special activities, students are allowed to wear "Wolverine Wear" (purchased through the NCS athletic dept. or from the on-line NCS store) with their uniform bottom (shorts, pants or skirts).  Students are to have shirts tucked inside at all times. 


• If my child has an appointment or I need to check my child out, what should I do? 

Appointments may be necessary during the school day.  If this is the case a note to your child's teacher would provide a 'heads up'. However, leaving school at any time requires the parent to sign the child out in the elementary office (returning to school requires a signature as well). The elementary requests that students NOT be checked out between 2:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.


• What if my child is going home with someone other than me?

Arrangements for transportation other than 'the usual' requires a note from home with your signature.  In the event that this is overlooked or plans change suddenly, a call to the office is expected.


• If my child doesn't have a lunch and I am unable to bring one, can he/she buy a hot lunch? 

Yes...you may send your child with $5 for the hot lunch or the kitchen can add the $5 fee to your school account.


• If my child is struggling in school, do you offer support services or tutoring? 

Yes.  Please contact the Discovery Center for more information on all of the great support programs that are available.
