Academic Activities offer learning experiences for the student to be challenged within a particular area of interest.
NCS participates in a variety of activities sponsored through ACSI (Association of Christian Schools International) along with sports competition through the NIAL (Northshore Independent Athletic League).
ACSI Events:
-
Spelling Bee (November)
-
The spelling bee is typically held the first Friday in November and is hosted by Westminster Christian Academy in Opelousas, LA. Grades 3-6 are eligible to participate, with the number of representatives determined by the number of sections our school has. Teachers are asked to select candidates in the manner they see fit. Names are forwarded to the office 30 days prior to the actual event. A graded word list is provided to the selected participants in order to prepare.
-
Speech Meet (Early Spring)
-
Grades 1-6 are eligible to participate in the Speech Meet, with the number of representatives determined by the number of sections our school has. The students participate in categories including Bible, Poetry, and Fable and Folklore for grades 1 -4, with the additional categories of Dramatic Bible Prose, Patriotic Oration and Original Speech for grades 5 - 6. These students first present their choice of selection in class for a language grade. Representatives from each class are selected by their teachers to go forward to Northlake's Speech Meet. A panel of judges then selects those students who will represent Northlake at the Regional Speech Meet. Mrs. Kelann Sigl then works with these students, coaching them in voice projection, effective interpretation and expression, stage presence, and proper speech techniques. Preparation and presentation of these selections encourages the students to gain confidence in effective communication in front of an audience and prepares them for further classroom presentation. Participation is not optional at the classroom level. The NCS meet is typically scheduled 45 days before the ACSI meet.
-
Science and Social Studies Fair (February / March)
-
Students in 5th and 6th grades participate in the NCS fair as a requirement of their respective classes. Students in the lower grades may participate on an optional basis. If they are interested, they should contact their homeroom teachers. Preparation for the fair is outlined in a science or social student packet that is provided to each student. Minimum preparation is two weeks with more required for elaborate study. The schedule for these school fairs is reviewed annually and in accordance with the school calendar. Regional competition is held the 3rd week in March at Southeastern Louisiana University
